Photos below cut of decluttering in progress, with "helpful" feline assistance.

I cannot believe how much progress I've made. This is the first time in my life I've ever wanted to tidy up. That is, it's the first time I've ever enjoyed the process, as opposed to wanting the end result. (Except for book arranging, which I've always enjoyed.) That gives me so much motivation to keep going, as I've never been much good at doing things that I don't enjoy without some kind of extremely compelling end result, such as getting a paycheck or passing a class.

I unfortunately failed to take a bunch of "before" photos, so the apparent "before" are really "midway" - assume there were more stacked up boxes and so forth before I encountered Marie Kondo.

Here is a lifetime's worth of accumulated jewelry, most of which I hardly ever wore as it was not convenient to find and was a jumble of boxes, little bags, boxes and little bags crammed into larger boxes, etc:

Cluttered bookcase, boxes of jewelry and coffee mug on floor

Here is the tidied-up jewelry arrangement. I am trying to wear one piece of jewelry and/or one item of clothing I like and don't regularly wear every day, because all the things I've kept are things I like and which still fit me, and it makes me happy to wear them. It's much easier to do so when I can find them and don't feel vaguely guilty when I look at how messy it all is.

The glass bangles are from India and when I was a little girl. I went through and tried every single one on. Some turned out to be cracked, and I threw them out. The majority no longer fit me, and I gave them away, hopefully to eventually get to some kid who will love them. The ones you see are the ones that I can still wear - and now I will wear them.

Now have some cats.

My only comment on your decision to declutter is that I'm cheering you on and delighted to see your domicile!!

This is inspiring me to do a massive decluttering of my closet. I have way more clothes than I need now, including a lot of stuff I've been holding onto that used to fit but doesn't anymore.

It is weird what a thrill you can get from doing this and how happy it can make you in a long-term, lingering way. Making my space neater in general is one of my things to do to to help lurch out of depressive bouts."

Also: KITTIES.

Ditto - I use this as a conscious strategy, even if it's just folding my clean laundry.

Huzzah! You have inspired me to resume decluttering efforts--I've gotten partly through clothing to donate, and expect I will putter about books too. :D I'm so glad it's going well for you!

I continue to be delighted to see you enjoying a positive life-changing event!

I have been reading your headings as Katamari and assumed you were rolling up all your non joy sparking objects into a giant ball! Photos look great. I have started this before but tend to run out of steam and leave everything in bags in cupboards but am planning to try again so encouragement is welcome.

I love Alex in the pounce crouch in that last one.

And the bookcases look so spiff!!!

Ahh, 'go through my jewelry' is my next big declutter thing, I have tried many times and just come up with another way to organize it into a mess. Yours looks very nice!

Even your midrange is less decluttered than my cleaned up. I'm kind of jealous. Good luck with the rest of your decluttering!

Also, your cats are adorable!

I did mean more decluttered! It was late and I was coming off a couple hours of playing Titan Quest.

But you have less clutter than me. Generally speaking!

More cats than me too. Also they are adorable, no matter how much havoc they wreak. I wish that I weren't allergic.

Ooo! Kitties! ...Lying in front of a very tidy bookcase, on a clean rug, neatly laid out. Go you!

You (and the Marie Kondo show) are also inspiring me to declutter! But I am planning on doing the (unusual and probably ill-advised) thing where I buy more things first and then declutter... (I need to upgrade some of my things, and so I think it’d probably be easier to declutter after I’ve acquired the upgraded stuff I need/want before I declutter the things I don’t.)

As someone who is new to this, is there a starting point to all the process? i.e. a video or a website that is an intro into this decluttering method you're doing?

Hello again, pretty kitties - and look at all those nice boxes! Part of my mental block against housework of all kinds is that I have almost literally no nice things. I have very little disposable income and so just end up using grubby shoe boxes and things for storage, and my apartment is kind of fundamentally shabby in some ways I can fix and some that I can't. But I guess if I ditched some of my grubby things, I would at least have more room for the nice things, if I ever got them? At least, that's what Marie Kondo would say.

I liked Marie Kondo's idea (in Spark Joy, which I just read) of taking an old sentimental jewelry box and pulling it apart to make multiple bento-style small containers. I might do it, if I still have my childhood jewelry box around somewhere.

It's a little funny seeing this second, TV-based wave of Kondomania after getting put in the path of the books several years ago. I'm glad you're enjoying the tidyfest! You have very nice-looking bookshelves, by the way - they look like they're friendly to and comfortable for the books in them.
