A meme from [personal profile] sholio, in which I asked for and received three things to talk about "that I may or may not know or care about." I was given:

1. Alexander Hamilton (the real person, not the fictional one!).

When I was in high school I was given Gore Vidal's novel Burr, and subsequently became obsessed with the contemporary-at-the-time controversy over who fired first at their duel. I spent something like a month reading contemporary accounts of the duel, arguments and theories about the duel, etc. For some reason my high school library had a lot of material on that, and this was pre-ordinary people having internet access so all my research was done via dusty books that had probably never been opened before or since. The whole thing was one of the few times I actually enjoyed myself while on my high school campus, although to be fair all of those times also occurred in the library.

I eventually came to the conclusion that Burr had fired first, and Hamilton had fired as a reflex when hit, which was why his bullet was so far off the mark (IIRC, it hit a tree branch way above Burr's head.) As for Hamilton's intent, hard to say as he could have either been bringing his gun into position to fire at Burr or to delope. Again IIRC, at the time I thought it was probably the former as all the people arguing that he meant to delope tended to portray him as a total saint and I didn't think he was, which made me doubt their arguments in general.

And that was the extent of my interest in Hamilton until Hamilton.

2. fireflies.

I have never seen them but have always wished to. I love glowing natural phenomena in general, but have never seen any of it: no phosphorescence, no fireflies, no Northern Lights. Hopefully some day.

Fireflies specifically are very associated in my mind with certain media: nostalgic anime about happy childhoods gone by, and also southern Gothics. When I think of them, I picture animated Japanese children in idyllic landscapes, or hot and humid southern nights perfumed with magnolias, while inside the house an intricate drama involving drunkenness, incest, and murder is playing out.

3. tentacle accidents.

[personal profile] sholio and I watched The Umbrella Academy together and really enjoyed it. This delightfully coincided with the Hurt-Comfort Exchange - those poor kids could really use some comfort. One of them, Ben, 1) was mysteriously dead and a ghost, 2) had tentacles. While musing about how he died, we wondered if it could have been an interdimensional tentacle accident, and promptly added "tentacle accident" to the tagset. Sadly I don't think anyone used it.

If you would also like three random things to talk about, just let me know!

It is firefly season here right now! They really do love hot, humid, still evenings, which we have a lot of. The past week has been cooler and more breezy at night so we're seeing fewer, but they're still there. They're very easy to catch, and sometimes when we go on an evening dog walk, my kids will each have a firefly riding around on their hand for a few blocks.

Sadly I don't think anyone used it.

That really feels like a missed opportunity.

I loved dusty old book research. I was so good at it when I first started freelancing, people hired me to do it for them. Then the internet. (sigh)

And I cannot imagine never having seen fireflies! I didn't realize they weren't everywhere in the USA. We used to love capturing them in a jar and watching them flash, but we always let them go before we went inside. They were too pretty to die.

In a duel, to delope is to deliberately fire into the air instead of at the person one is dueling with.

I'm not sure I've ever seen the word except in context of the Hamilton-Burr duel. It is common knowledge (which is not the same as fact) that Hamilton deloped, and then Burr shot Hamilton dead.

Re: tentacle accidents, I couldn't help myself. ;D

I have only ever lived somewhere with fireflies once, and that was the couple of years I spent in Illinois while Orion was going to grad school there. I did not actually realize until living there that fireflies blink on and off, because I'd only ever seen them in still pictures! I didn't know you hadn't seen them, and I hope you're able to see them someday; they are really pretty.

Three random things would be great!

I feel the same way as you about glowing natural phenomena, we don't even have fireflies in this country.

We just started having fireflies. It's a bit early: they usually come at the end of June..

I would love three things.

Tentacle accidents!

Ahaha! 😂

I grew up with the northern lights (on cold clear winter nights) and I really miss them. There's something pure and beautiful about them, almost heartbreakingly gorgeous even if you're freezing your ass off to look at them. Even if they're just a simple green or white, though sometimes we'd get more complex colours. I'd love to see the really elaborate ones further north someday, and the southern lights as well.

I've seen fireflies once or twice when I lived in Tennessee for a few years. I was really charmed and very much felt like "Wow! These really exist??"

I have now fallen into the Wikipedia article for deloping. I didn't know that had a name!

We still have fireflies in Queens, NY, though not as many as when I was a kid. I've always loved that flashing effect in the night.

Some here in Brooklyn too. J and I glimpsed a few on our evening walk the other day. There will be more when the muggy weather sets in. A few years ago we happened to be in Lincoln Terrace Park on a night when it was FULL of fireflies; it was an amazing light show. I've seen whole fields of them upstate too.

I've never seen a full field of them. I'm envious!

We had fireflies in Missouri, which I think is the only place I've lived that had them. They were indescribably beautiful.

Now I want to go on a vacation to somewhere that has fireflies, during firefly season, just to watch them. :)

We call fireflies "lightning bugs" in my neck of the woods, and they're just starting to turn up at night. It's amazing to go out in the countryside and see large swathes of lawn lit up in their blinking light display.
