I got sidelined a bit by breaking my foot, which meant that I couldn't carry stuff and walk at the same time for three months. Nevertheless, I persisted!

Also I finally gave in and paid to have my 10-year-old gross carpet replaced since my landlord said he'd do it, but he'd raise my rent if he did. Since I had to move everything out of my bedroom, I took the opportunity to not move stuff back in if I didn't want it in there.

If you have moral objections to decluttering or do not wish to declutter your own place, please do not share those sentiments in comments.

Photos below cut.

Here are a few "before" images of my bedroom:

And after!

I was halfway into a massive cleaning of the sitting room (with attendant boxes of Things To Be moved) when all hell broke loose in my personal life, and now I have my mom's unsorted papers as well as my own. As well as three suitcases of Stuff I brought back from home.

I feel sad.

New carpet really does make everything look new. I remember when my mom and my sister and I decided to recarpet the house we were renting, which had utterly ancient, terrible carpet. We couldn't afford to have new carpet put in professionally, so we actually just bought a bunch of giant "scraps" of carpet for cheap (they were large enough to fully carpet every room except the living room, which ended up with a seam near one wall), and cut them to size ourselves -- and even with our amateur workmanship, just the fact of the carpet being new made the whole house look so much better.

Your room looks great. :D Also, I'm continually amazed by how many bookshelves (and books!) you have. As someone who currently only has one room (which is full of books), I think I'm actually less envious of how much space you've got than of the fact that you seem to also have enough books for all of it! :D

Your place looks awesome! Decluttering is wonderful when done by people who benefit from it. :D I'm always happy to see your updates.

That looks serene, restful. I love your wall color, too!

I really like the rug at the foot of your bed in the decluttered photo.

And while I was going to remark that your unreconstructed bedroom looked great compared to mine, the improvement is obvious and seems very pleasant.

Thank you! It's a detail from Salvatore Rosa's "Lucrezia as the Personification of Poetry." I went to see it with one of my partners in 2007 and both of us thought of Coleridge, but it was my partner who actually spoke the words on the icon and then made the icon for me.

Here's a link to an image of the painting:

(I love it because it always reminds me of the first Dirk Gently book.)

I blush to confess that I have never yet read those books. I read the Hitchhiker ones very late, to the point where I kept exclaiming, "THAT's where that comes from!" like somebody reading Hamlet for the first time at an equally advanced age.

Aww! I inhaled Hitchhiker's after a classmate did a book report on them in junior high, which was VERY daring -- a book by a LIVE author? A FUNNY book? A SCIENCE FICTION book? But I loved the bits he read out so much I convinced my parents to buy them, and we all read them. It was great. Then we all watched the show and my dad read the radio scripts to me, too. My college freshman year roommate lent me the first Gently book -- at first I was almost shocked it was so different, but it's really moving and funny. The sequel is ehh, though.

I love all your shelving. Not only does the de-cluttered look so tidy, the shelves themselves are some really nice ones.

I know how much this means to you, and I'm glad you were able to get back to it. Also, your bedroom looks lovely.

We pulled out all the old carpet in the downstairs last summer and replaced it with hardwood, and I have been so happy with it. Sometime once the kids are out of their disgusting teen dirty-clothes-dishes-and-books-all-over-the-floor years I'll do it upstairs, too....

The look of all those perfectly shelved books is so soothing.

My neighborhood has a lot of Little Free Libraries and anytime I'm out for a walk and pass one, I stop and organize it. (You'd think I might do this for my own books but there's something about a tiny, manageable task...)

I do appreciate the look of an uncluttered room - like them myself (g). Had to grin at the thought of anybody having a moral objection to decluttering. Don't think I've ever met such; clutterers usually say they would like to fix it but can't decide where to start, or something like that.

It's been a long time since I had a carpet - previous place had wooden planks and this one has tiles - but I can remember a succession of crappy rental carpets before that. They do lose their condition faster than bare materials. Unless you're my mum, in which case your place always looks like a Home Open!

That rug is super! I love bright geometrics like that. (The rest looks great too, but that rug is really eye-catching!)

I just wanted to say that your decluttering entries have inspired me to do the same, and now my stuff (and life) is a bit more organised (and unfortunately not going to get more than that, because I'm moving for a four month job, but I am proud of the progress I have made!). So, thank you!

....I confess I was like "ooh it's a lot easier to see the titles now" and zoomed right in on that King bookcase.

Looks great, how tidy the room now is, yay! Also, what a big difference the new carpet makes. Looks like a wonderful investment! :D
