I have reached the stage of moving in which I regret owning anything.

I am also low-key panicking over the final stage of moving, in which people need to come into my apartment and move stuff around. I will have all the windows open and fans going and will insist that they wear masks and will stay outside myself as much as possible BUT STILL.

The other day my garage spring broke so I couldn't get into my garage. It took my landlord two days to dispatch his father-in-law, who OFC kept trying to get into my personal space and breathe on me. I had to literally wave my hands in his face to get him to move back.

The reason I'm moving is largely that it is nearly impossible to get people to wear masks and/or stand back and/or cover their noses when they do wear masks. This is true even when I have lengthy phone conversations in advance where I get them to promise that they will wear a real mask, not a bandanna, and cover their nose, and not take off the mask as soon as they arrive. Then they arrive and proceed to do exactly what they promised not to do. I have a feeling that this is also going to be an issue with the movers.

You tape the mask on them.

(Which I have seen done in a construction context with dust masks, quite voluntarily, because the little ear strap elastics weren't up to the job.)

UGH. A lot of men seem to think their scrotum will wither and fall off if they wear a mask over their mouth and nose. I was lucky with my movers, thank goodness, even though one of them, a last-minute hire, crapped out halfway through.

Perhaps ironically, covid is associated with erectile dysfunction (vascular damage). I'm trying not to end this comment with "They should think harder"....

It's more likely evidence it already did!

Hoping for the best possible movers and the smoothest move possible!

I have no clue why people are such assholes about wearing masks sometimes. It's NOT THAT HARD. I really hope you don't wind up having to deal with more of this.

Early on in the pandemic, Orion and I had a running semi-joke about mask drones that clamp onto people's faces facehugger-style and deposit a mask, and I still can't believe that the problem if anything has gotten even worse in six months - people who were wearing masks all along have either grown used to it or tired of it, and people who weren't are apparently never gonna start no matter how high the case load gets. It's so frustrating.

That's great:) The ones I saw were about twice the size, and a completely three-dimensional segmented implementation, with arms that would wrap around your head and a tail that would wrap around your neck. IIRC the body, limbs and tail were constructed from leather, and while I presume there was a conventional mask under there, you genuinely couldn't tell!

I'm keeping all my fingers crossed for a smooth move and for the movers to be decent.

Ugh, yes. Our fridge needed work and two repair guys showed up yesterday without masks. Because we are so conflict-avoidant, I huddled back in my office because they didn't call or text before showing up so I was still in my nightgown and robe (the plus side of working from home), and [personal profile] myrialux told them what was wrong then escaped back to his office until they were done. Although he said if they ask us to complete a survey he'll complain about the lack of masks.

Oy. I wish you the best with your moving experience. We just moved (last month), and I was pretty freaked out about hiring movers, but the three guys who showed up actually kept their masks on the whole time (covering their noses and everything, even!), through two full hours of moving furniture out to their truck and then another two hours of moving it into the other house. It astonishingly ended up being one of the least alarming social encounters I've had since the pandemic started. Which is all to say, there are still some decent folks out there... I hope your movers end up being among them!

I hope your move goes smoothly and the movers are masked! I've been lucky because everyone from the exterminator to the cleaning lady to the delivery dudes from the diner have been masked.

Those are some difficult stages of moving. ): And the difficulty with getting people to wear masks correctly is definitely something I can sympathize with.

Oh, God, that does not sound like fun. Good luck on getting through with a minimal amount of dealing with no-mask folks.

If the movers are a professional company, I wouldn't worry. During the pandemic I've had an electrician (just one guy), plumber (one guy), and insulation installers (team of 3-4 guys) and all of them wore proper masks and kept them on properly at all times.

"I have reached the stage of moving in which I regret owning anything."

Haha, that perfectly summarises my last move, too. That one was without a pandemic, mercifully.

I am just now catching up on DW (suddenly having more time due to being in quarantine..) and I am unclear on whether the day of the move is already over. If not, I wish you a good day with mask-wearing movers -- and maybe consider buying a KN95 mask for yourself as extra protection? Best wishes!!
