I may have to do a separate entry on the Bleach anime to fully describe the wondrousness of Rukia's voice actor and the parakeet episode. There is an episode involving a haunted parakeet. I read this in the manga and thought, "Yeah, yeah, whatever." Then I saw the anime and literally fell off the bed-- twice-- which was quite a feat considering that it was a futon. Oyce and I were laughing so maniacally that we had to stop and rewind because we'd missed parts because we were doubled over on the floor. No, we were not drunk.
Also, something I totally missed in the manga, because it's in English, is that Rukia uses the macho male forms normally (which I don't think I've ever seen in an anime before-- even Utena uses polite male forms) but switches to hyper-feminized Japanese schoolgirl mode when she's posing as a schoolgirl. This also caused much falling about. Finally, what is with Ichigo's furry pimp jacket in the credits? Can't someone with taste dress the boy?
Yesterday we went hiking on the property. It's quite beautiful, if squishy, and the manzanita has flowers ike tiny pink lightbulbs and smooth bark of polished copper. There's star-gazing rocks like in A Swiftly Tilting Planet.
For dinner we went out with my parents and a friend of theirs and a friend of his to this country restaurant where a guy was singing folk and country songs. He suddenly yodeled, "Yippie-yi-yaaaaaay...." and Oyce and I kicked each other under the table, "Yippie-yi-yoooooooo.... Ghost riders.... In the skyyyyyyyyyyyy.... YIP!" Oyce and I went "pffffft," and Dad remarked quietly, "Yip!" At which point Oyce and I nearly had to leave the room.
PS. Is it daylight savings?

It would be interesting to compare them! Is the difference simply a product of when they were made? The ultra slurry, ultra slangy "w'ka'nai zo" or "w'karan" type boy Japanese that everyone speaks in Bleach is pretty modern "yoof slang". I don't know how much guys talked like that in the early 90s, when Utena was made. My impression is that as young girls in Japan are starting to drop the female stylings and speak in a more masculine way in general, guys are creating and retreating into an increasingly hyper-masculine speech of the kind that's used in Bleach. But this shift is a fairly recent phenomenon, the last 5-10 years.
