Idea from Janni, who also noticed that a number of people have added her to their "friends" list (which really ought to be called a reading list-- "friends" reminds me of traumatic third-grade incidents in which people inform you that Cindy is their best friend and Sarah is their second-best friend and you're only their third-best friend.):

If I don't already know who you are and you'd care to say hello and introduce yourself here, feel free. The same goes for readers who don't have a livejournal. Livejournal can be a bit confusing with all the pen names, so if I don't seem to have picked up that "dreadpirateroberts" on livejournal is also "Westley" from usenet, do let me know.

You only have to do this if you want to, of course.

This has long been my reaction to the friends list, too!

The one that particularly amuses me is the tab reading "Manage Friends." Oh yeah, right. Like that's going to happen.

Hi. I'm Marissa Lingen. I don't know you, and I don't remember from whose journal I got here. I write books and short stories and other stuffs.

I like "edit friends." There have been times when I wished I could have that as a super power.

A running joke in the sysop lounge in the old GEnie SFRT was the RUM command: "reformat user's mind".

Not a bad idea.
I'm Rebecca Scott, from Green Man, and I wandered over to see what was up during the whole LJ/blog discussion.

From: [identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com

See, I had no idea that was who you were. Thanks for telling me. (What LJ/blog discussion, where?)

From: [identity profile] inaurolillium.livejournal.com

The one where somebody said, "Who has a blog, and what other blogs do you read?" and everyone started going, "I do! And my LJ name is ______."

From: [identity profile] copperwise.livejournal.com

It was in Natter; Cat asked who blogged and it turns out that more of us are on LJ than I realized!

Mia

From: [identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com

Ack, I'm not on Natter. (I read too many online things anyway.) So who all has a blog?

From: [identity profile] copperwise.livejournal.com

beau_wolff, bluewoad, fireriven, gastonmonescu, greypersona, hokelore, inaurolillium, medievalist, ssutterw, tanuki_green

Which would be Jon Northwood (new staffer), Matthew, Deborah, Craig, Grey, Tim, Rebecca, Lisa, Sara (new staffer), and Ryan

And a couple of staffers have blogs in other places, but I've deleted that list.

Re: Watashi no namae wa Janis. (desu? ... Is that right?)

Yeah, I think there should be a desu there. Hi, TK. If you want to help me with my unbelievably cool secret project, CALL ME.

According to LJ staff posts, there's a near-term plan (month or two) to split the "friends list" into two lists: who you read and who you trust with locked posts. Not clear which gets custody of the name.

Hi, I'm just some guy named Larry.

Hi, Larry. ;) I think the two-list thing is a great idea.

Hey, I want to help you with your unbelievably cool secret project, too! Unless I'm only your fourth best friend, or somewhere lower, in which case I'm going to invite my other best friends to help me with my unbelievably cool ultra ultra secret project, if I had one.

From: [identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com

Come to think of it, you _could_ help me, if you like and you don't think it'll be a conflict of interest. I'll email you.

Hi. I've (mostly) lurked on r.a.sf.w for about eleven years; I keep rn and this alias separate, but even if I didn't I'm not sure you'd recognize the former. I got here via [livejournal.com profile] kate_nepveu or [livejournal.com profile] melymbrosia or [livejournal.com profile] yhlee....
