Idea from Janni, who also noticed that a number of people have added her to their "friends" list (which really ought to be called a reading list-- "friends" reminds me of traumatic third-grade incidents in which people inform you that Cindy is their best friend and Sarah is their second-best friend and you're only their third-best friend.):

If I don't already know who you are and you'd care to say hello and introduce yourself here, feel free. The same goes for readers who don't have a livejournal. Livejournal can be a bit confusing with all the pen names, so if I don't seem to have picked up that "dreadpirateroberts" on livejournal is also "Westley" from usenet, do let me know.

You only have to do this if you want to, of course.

According to LJ staff posts, there's a near-term plan (month or two) to split the "friends list" into two lists: who you read and who you trust with locked posts. Not clear which gets custody of the name.
