I am totally stumped. Help me title this.

1. Manga often have titles with no apparent relevance to the subject except that they sound cool, ie, Bleach, Hot Gimmick, Paradise Kiss.

2. Themes and/or motifs: the prince and the country boy, heat and cold, tropics and mountaintops, martial arts, grappling, fighting, sparring, close vs. long range techniques, sweat, weapons and bare hands, body heat, nature and civilization, wolves, journeys, home, fear, power, control, family, passion, love, touch.

3. Words that I wrote out to see if I could combine them: Fire, frost, ice, snow, canal, wolf/wolves, cold, heat, hot, summit, clous, mountain, steel, stone, hands, sword, melt, close, peak, far, near, sky, fall. If you see any good combinations or related words that might make a good title...

I think I like airy-sounding ones, esp. given that you're talking about the mountains. So "Spindrift" has a nic sound, and I like "silk" and "clouds" and maybe something to do with mountains. So, "Spinning Cloudsilk Mountain"? *g*

I'm not actually sure a gay love story is ever allowed to use "Mountain" in the title again. At least for a hundred years or so, when it stops implying parody.

Heh. I didn't even think of that. My last suggestino was a joke, of course. :)

I like Gay Tibetan Martial Arts Manga best. Sometimes obvious is right. Worked well for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Uh, please don't quote that first sentence out of context.

What are the main characters names? Using one or both of the romantic leads is often nice.

There's always Planetbusters.

"Fire and Frost" sounds too much like a bad fantasy or romance novel to me.

I like "Cloud Hands." I think it's a taiji move, but regardless, it just seems more evocative. :) The others don't provoke much response from me.

You could always try my Shoujo Manga Title Generator:

"Cloud Hands" is a kata from Shotokan Karate, which makes it out-of-period, out-of-style, and out-of-location. I just like the way it sounds.

From: [identity profile] wintersweet.livejournal.com

It's also taijiquan; I just double-checked. So maybe it transcends all that and is thus totally appropriate. ;)

I really like Cloud Hands. But for variety, I will toss out "Wolves Travel Far".

My husband and I both voted for "Spindrift", although in the interests of full disclosure I should add that I only offered him my two favorites (the other being "Cloud Hands") as options. ^^

Spindrift was popular during the gothic romance period--so there's likely small crossover (except oddballs like myself; I read all those when I was twelve and thirteen).

Clouds hands gets extra points from me because it's a defensive move in tai chi.

Poked a bit at meteorology-type sites (http://binky.thinkquest.nl/~ll118/en/development/types.html) to find the names of mountain winds.

"The "knik" wind is also called: matanuska, pruga, stikine, takn, take, turnagain, williwaw. This wind develops because of cold air moving down high mountanious areas. They can blow over 110 kph (70mph). They occur all over the world, such as the region Patagonia, off the coast of Tierra del Fuego right down to the Falkland Islands. They are also called Alaskan wind, since they also occur in the vicinity of Palmer, Alaska, where they are most frequent in the winter."

Out of all that, I like "Turnagain." Because I just do.

The karaburan blows through central Asia. It is a hot, dusty wind, which develops because of the warming of winds blowing down the lee side of a mountain ( a bit north of our location, though)

The buran and burga are names of winds that in Texas are known as a blue norther and in the snow-bearing areas of the States as a blizzard.

Sky Sweeper - This wind blows on the Spanish Island of Majorca. When there is a northwest wind to the island, it has to go up the mountains. There it will loose all of its moisture. The dry air goes down the mountain, and speeds up. This causes compression, what causes a rise in temperature. Now a warm and dry wind is blowing from the northeast over the island.

I need to stop this: I've got to get more work done and I've got about 45 minutes left to do it.

I have a cat-breeding friend who gave all of her certain-patterned cats weather names. She has a whole gamut of funky global names for wind, if you're looking for one.

If she has any Himalayan-area (Tibet, Nepal, northern India) names, that could be Very Good :D

I like Turnagain too. I can't figure out how to make it a title though.

...I vote for "none of the above." "Fire and Frost," "Ice Melt," and "One Chance" sound like either bad girly shoujo or romance novel titles. "Match" would make me think the whole thing was about fighting; "Cloud Hands" sounds like some lame Generokee name someone picked for themselves after watching "Dances With Wolves" one time to many; "Spendrift" makes me think of Initial D (...I live in Gunma. Can't be helped). "Silk Reel," is cool, though, but I would be stupid and pick it up thinking it was something set along the Silk Road or in ancient China.

How about naming the series after the place it's supposed to be happening? Like, the name of the village or whatever? That'll give it an "exotic" (...oh, there's that word I usually hate so much) and still be very relevent, since this is the place that's drawn them together and that people travel for and wide to get to.

...Or just call it "Gatma." (Hint: GAy Tibetan Marial Artists)

From: [identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com

Um. Setting is a martial arts school in a very remote area (and before the current borders between Tibet/China/Nepal/etc were established), ie, there is no village that we ever see (although it's close enough to walk to). I haven't yet named the school either, though in that case it's because I'd like the name to be in Tibetan. So you wouldn't be terribly far off if you thought it was set in ancient China.

"Cloud Hands" and "Silk Reel" are both martial arts techniques, by the way.

From: [identity profile] boniblithe.livejournal.com

Cloud Hands makes me think of a wispy Native American. Silk Reel sounds like a dance step.

I really like the name "silk reel." I don't know anything about the manga, but the name has a lot of inherent posibilities, just by definition. Silk brings to mind smoothness, quality, and calmness. Reel has many definitions, imply pulling in, or spinning, as well as bring a thread-related object.

I like "Cloud Hands." "Spindrift" would be my next choice. I also like someone's suggestion of "Sky and Frost."

From: [identity profile] movingfinger.livejournal.com

"Spindrift" should be a sea-themed manga, which this isn't. "Silk Reel" implies the story unspooling, and tension, and reeling in, and all kinds of Asian connections. "Cloud Hands" is nebulous and dreamlike, rather wonderful in its combination of active and passive elements.
