I've posted occasionally about stage-managing for the Virginia Avenue Project. It's a mentoring program, with theatre as the basis but not limited to kids who intend to go into artistic careers.
100% of the kids who stick with the program graduate from high school.
90% of them go on to college.
85% of them are the first person in their family to go to college.
I missed their last show because I completely lost track of when it was. So I called the office to check on the next one. (They have a schedule posted; I wanted to drive up to the summer camp they do in advance of the official performance, though, and that's not posted.) The person who picked up the phone was their newest intern: a young woman whom I first met when she was eleven or twelve, I think, and who is now at NYU majoring in dramatic writing.
If you live in LA, check out the website and drop in on a show. They're great fun, and appropriate for all ages.
Signs of the Times Part 2
9 different plays at the 24th Street Theater
