Gratuitous food porn-- I'll show you mine, you show me yours.

What's the last thing you ate?

Trader Joe's vegetable pasta, frozen and microwaved, with cheese melted over it.

What's your favorite cheese?

I like almost any cheese that's melted, but especially mozzarella. If it's not melted, I like pepper jack in roast beef sandwiches.

What's your favorite fish?

Yellowtail, as sushi (delicate yet buttery) or grilled. Mackerel is also great as sushi (rich and oily).

What's your favorite fruit?

Fresh lychees.

When, if ever, did you start liking olives?

I have always loved olives.

When, if ever, did you start liking beer?

In my mid twenties, when I discovered Sapporo. I still don't like dark beers.

When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish?

I think I always did.

What was the best thing your mum/dad/guardian used to make?

My mother used to make a great pineapple upside-down cake with canned pineapple and a crumb topping. My father's an excellent cook, but no one dish is leaping out at me. His ciopinno last week was delicious.

What's the native specialty of your home town?

Which home town? Ahmednagar had excellent mangoes, but was otherwise a culinary wasteland. I don't think Hawthorne has a native specialty, unless you count Ripple.

What's your comfort food?

Hot chocolate with minature marshmallows, burgers and root beer, fried eggs. I also like to fry some bacon and bake a potato. Then I mash the potato with the bacon fat and a little butter, and top it with the bacon.

How do you like your steak?

On the bone, medium-rare.

How do you like your burger?

Medium-rare, with bacon, lettuce, onions, and ketchup. Or maybe with a fried egg. On a toasted bun.

How do you like your eggs?

Edges brown and crispy, whites totally firm, yolk runny. With salt, pepper, and a sprinkle of brown sugar.

How do you like your potatoes?

Mashed with garlic and lots of butter, french-fried extra-crispy with ketchup, or baked with butter, salt and pepper, cheese, sour cream, and chives.

How do you take your coffee?

Cream and sugar.

How do you take your tea?

Green or herbal, hot.

What's your favorite mug?

The dark blue one with the little chip that I got at Ashland, OR when I was in high school, with Shakespeare quotes on it.

What's your biscuit or cookie of choice?

Pepperidge Farm Sausalito, with milk chocolate chunks and macadamia nuts, crispy. Or anyone's home-made oatmeal or peanut butter. Or Entemann's Heath toffee cookies. Or real Scottish shortbread.

What's your ideal breakfast?

Either a traditional American with fried eggs, coffee, bacon, hash browns, toast, Tabasco sauce for the eggs, and real maple syrup for the bacon, or a traditional Japanese with broiled fish, rice, nori, pickles, and green tea.

What's your ideal sandwich?

A perfect Rueben.

What's your ideal pizza (topping and base)?

New York style thin crust, with garlic and everything but anchovies. I also like ham and pineapple.

What's your ideal pie (sweet or savory)?

Home made blueberry or pecan, warm, with real home made whipped cream. I don't think I've ever had a savory pie.

What's your ideal salad?

A traditional Caesar.

In my late 20s, I discovered I like dark beers — especially dark Asian beers or a homebrew porter — but will still take a hard cider over any brew.

When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish?
I never did, and increasingly dislike them, in such a way that makes me wonder whether I'm becoming allergic.

What was the best thing your mum/dad/guardian used to make?
My mother cooks so much that was good, it's hard to pick out any one thing; but I do miss her moussaka. My father is an excellent hand with a hibachi, both meat and fish.

What's the native specialty of your home town?
Washington, DC, has no native specialty. It doesn't even have a native culture. Tucson is, however, one of the two places who claim to have invented the chimichanga (the other is Hermosillo, Sonora).

Greens with veggies — whatever's in the fridge that hasn't gotten limp yet.
