Interesting concepts, uneven execution. Wild speculation on next week's episode, which I must download (or rather, have [livejournal.com profile] oyceter download for me) from Taiwan. On the positive side, it had one of the best demonstrations yet of the cast's wonderful polymorphous chemistry. Almost everyone strikes sparks off almost everyone else, and since so many of them still haven't met, this continues to surprise and delight.

Mohinder + Sylar for the win! That was a great scene, spooky and compelling. Poor Mohinder, the only person who wants to talk to him is a creepy psychopath! Pretty Mohinder is even prettier when he's enthusiastic! Freaky Sylar is even freakier when he's wearing his victim's shirt! I felt bad for Melty Guy, who clearly had no clue what people named Mohinder Suresh commonly look like. Perhaps the moral is that a lack of knowledge of Indian names will lead to tragedy and decapitation.

Hiro's storyline was a bit meh, not helped by Hope's bad acting. There was a nice bit of meta in the reversal of the old pulp trope of evil Asian men suckering blonde women into danger (like opium dens), which I am assuming was intentional as signaled by Hope's explicitly racist remarks. I also liked Hiro throwing himself against the door. But Hiro and Ando at odds makes me sad, and the storyline was very predictable. I want them to interact with the other heroes more.

However, despite the poor execution, there were a couple interesting things going on in the plot. One is that Ando, consistently the carrier of the idea that you don't need powers to be a hero, claimed that concept and successfully executed a dangerous task. The other thing is that this paralled Matt's plight, in which his powers were actually counterproductive to his goals (which has been a consistent theme with him too) in that hearing Niki's thoughts just allowed Jessica to trick him. (I kind of loved Jessica there-- she is so smart, albeit reckless.)

Hiro's power loss seems clearly psychological, a reaction to his failure to save Charlie and abetted by his always-shaky control of teleportation. This seems backed up by Peter's similar issue, and how the key to his power was psychological, not physical. Hiro needs to meet Claude! Although I do think that if Hiro thinks the sword will help him, it will. But I also wonder, since Hiro keeps saying that powers are not necessary, if he's subconsciously deprived himself of powers to prove to himself that he would be a hero even without them.

I loved the Claire-Nathan-Mrs. Bennet plot. Ackkkk, she has forgotten Mr. Muggles! I think she is not long for the world. I feel sorry for her, Claire, Mr. Muggles, and the Haitian guy, who I suspect had no idea it would come to this. And also for Mr. Bennet. Though whatever guilt he feels, he richly deserves.

Regarding "one will die," I think it will be Mrs. Bennet. That would be sad, plausible, and have an interesting effect on Claire and Mr. Bennet.

Hiro, Peter, and Claire can't die. They are the heart of the show. Also, Hiro and Peter are alive in the future (scar, perfect English) so though a temporal paradox could allow them to die, I think it's unlikely.

I could see Nathan redeeming himself by dying tragically and heroically, but not this soon, I think. Ditto Jessica/Niki. They are the most morally ambiguous of the heroes, so it would be a bad idea to kill them.

Ando cannot die because I love him so much.

Mohinder is too pretty to die, plus he has a lot of unresolved backstory.

Mr. Bennet is too interesting and too much of a motivating figure.

Claude might die at some point, but not yet, I think; we haven't seen enough of him.

Micah would be too depressing.

Isaac, Simone, the Haitian, Sylar, Matt, Audrey, Matt's wife, and DL (not DL!) are possibilities, as none of them are central to the plot in the way the others are. I personally would hate to lose DL, and I'm really enjoying Sylar's villainy and chemistry with Mohinder, so I hope it's not him. I also like Isaac, though he's been underused. I'd rather see Simone get more interesting storylines than die, but as is, the show could survive without her. Audrey, whom I like, seems to have dropped out of the story. Matt I could live without. Matt's wife is pregnant, giving her sentimental value and making her unlikely to die, but I could definitely live without her. I don't think the Haitian has had enough screen time for his death to be really dramatic and to affect the other characters, plus he's cool and I'd like to see more of him.

It's very impressive how much I like so many characters. I can't think of any other non-anime show where the deaths of any fifteen characters would break my heart.

I also don't want them to kill (yet another) woman, so I'm hoping for Radioactive Guy or something. Though I think they do mean to kill off someone major. Right now, I am gunning for Matt, just because he is boring. And I have a cracktastic hope that Matt's death will somehow spark his wife's powers because damnit, there need to be more women!

And I want Isaac to stay alive because he's interesting! Or, he has the potential to be interesting! Also, byakugan.

I wonder if Niki will die and Jessica will live. That would be neat.

Nooo, not Matt's wife! Anyone but Matt's wife! She bores me to death.

I did hear they're introducing a new female character, but maybe that was Meredith. (I also read in an interview that the second season will be more international. That should be interesting.)

Niki/Jessica... whoa. I never thought of that.

I vote for Matt. He's taking up valuable screen time.

Leave the Weiss alone! *clutches Grunberg protectively* It's not his fault that his first day on the bodyguarding job, he ran into a psycho assassin with super-strength!

This calls for a poll!

I am hoping that maybe she will get more interesting by interacting with non-Matt characters, much as Simone got a lot more interesting when taken out of the love triangle of DOOM Utter Boredom.

I vote for Matt too.

Somewhere on a magic sneaky website that pretends to be for Mr. Bennet's paper company (I'm sooo useful with my details here!) there are these character files, one of which is for a woman whose code name (I'm assuming) is Wireless, which, well, I didn't read much, for being afeared of spoilers, but THAT sounds COOL.

I sort of don't want Matt to die, and I can't figure out why. Perhaps because it does seem so obvious. He's just not connected like, oh, everybody else.

I think it's Mrs. Bennett who'll go (they always kill off women much more readily than men), though Claire's biological mother is also a possibility.

I keep seeing someone at work who looks just like Hiro!

Could be Isaac, since we know that Sylar was going to kill him in the future that Hiro saw. Poor Mrs. Bennet is really racing down the oblivion parkway, though.

Hiro needs to meet Claude!

I dunno. I suspect Claude would be immune to Hiro's Powers of Adorability, and would quite cheerfully throw him into the path of a bus or something, which could end with flat Hiro. Which is UNACCEPTABLE!

the key to his power was psychological, not physical

Claire's bio-mother says, "what a family". Is that because she knows Nathan can fly? If not, wouldn't she say something more along the lines "what a pair" or "like mother, like daugther"? Nathan seemed freaked out when he flew and the car with his wife crashed. Was it because he had never flown before, or because he thought he no longer had to worry about flying?

P.S. Did you like Nora Zehetner, the actor for Edy? If so, have you seen Brick? It's got both her and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who was so good in Mystic Skin.
