And one more thing, don't bother reading this if you haven't seen the anime series of the subject line:
My CD of Yami no Matsuei (Descendants of Darkness) thank you again boniblithe had no subtitles for episode 11, part II of the Kyoto arc. I think I followed most of it, at least in terms of general plot-related stuff, but there's one bit which seemed crucial which I missed.
When Tsuzuki and Hisoka find Muraki standing over one dead girl and one live one, Muraki says something to Tsuzuki which makes him go to pieces and say, "It's my fault." Did Muraki blame Tsuzuki for the dead girl, for the earlier killings, or for something in Tsuzuki's past?

Well anyway - Muraki tells the girls that to meet a shinigami means you are going to die. He does tell Tsuzuki something along the lines of "look how beautiful all this gore is" and that he's come to take Tsuzuki away now. I'll check the OTHER copy of my DVD when I get home and tell you exactly what the subtitle says. Mostly, Muraki doesn't say anything revelatory or shocking - I think it's primarily Tsuzuki's own sense of guilt that drives him to his knees.
And then Tatsumi comes and insults Muraki and threatens him and damn, I'm going to have to see if I can rip that scene for you because Tatsumi is Teh Sexy in that one.

I love Tatsumi. I think I love him more than anyone else in the show, even though he's hardly in it until the Kyoto arc. Maybe it's the glasses.
So is it detailed, in the manga or in the unsubbed episode, what exactly happened to Tsuzuki that made him attempt suicide and go catatonic in the Muraki family hospital? Was it just (just!) being shunned and abused his entire life, or was it something he did (revenge for all the shunning and abuse?) that made him feel guilty?
Something about YnM strikes me as being a sort of Platonic Ideal of fanfic, except that it's actually an original story. It's not just all the beautiful men and boys swearing eternal togetherness. Perhaps it's that the leads both have tremendous powers, tremendous angst, and jewel-colored eyes.

I have what Boni calls my crazy Yami conspiracy theories related to this, but I'll hold off relating them.

It's never stated specifically what caused Tsuzuki to go insane and end up under Yukitaka Muraki's care. It's only implied that he committed some kind of atrocity and killed many people, but for all we know, that could be his guilt playing up; perhaps his guilty conscience led him to assume responsibility for these deaths. I wrote an essay on Tsuzuki and the subject of guilt a while back, speculating on his motives and background.
I think Yami no Matsuei is ideal for writing fanfic. You have all these attractive and sympathetic characters with hazy backstories and huge plotholes--it's just asking to be ficced!

"Tsuzuki-san...Isn't it beautitful? These beasts love the taste of human meat."
"Poor little girl...Once she sees a shinigami, she is fated to die."
(Tsuzuki collapses)
"What's wrong, Tsuzuki-san? You look hurt. Tsuzuki-san...come, let's go."

Then Tatsumi, "OMG Muraki I'll fuck you up dawg" and Muraki "OMG eek Tatsumi is a bad mamma jamma" and so on.
