I know I'm not the only one thinking about this already!

I have two interesting thoughts for Yuletide requests next year.

One, if Anne McCaffrey is still eligible, would be to fix the horrible misogynist fate of Mirrim, who was one of my very favorite characters in the early books. I was thrilled when she impressed a fighting dragon. But lo! She then turned into a horrible bitch whom everyone hated, and the nicest thing even her best friend Menolly could say about her was that she might be nicer once she got raped laid.

My possible Yuletide request: Write dragonrider Mirrim the way McCaffrey should have written her.

Dragonsong (The Harper Hall Triology)

Two, George R. R. Martin's "Thousand Worlds" series: his '70s space opera stories, all far-flung planets and romantic sense of wonder and doom. Original characters would be fine, since his mostly die.

Dreamsongs: Volume I

ETA: Three thoughts.

Three, Red Cliff. Zhuge Liang/Zhou Yu. Slashy slash slash!

What are your preliminary desires?

What happened with Mirrim reminds me of what fanfic writers do to characters they don't like and want to get away from the character with whom they are in lust. Except that it was the same author ... .

Maybe she wanted to hook Menolly up with Sebell (a pairing that leaves me utterly cold) and was worried that Mirrim/Menolly might spontaneously combust the universe with coolness...

Okay, maybe that's just me.
chomiji: Revy, the violent yet appealing lead in Rei Hiroe's manga Black Lagoon: two guns, no waiting! (Revy - gun)

I find poor Menolly sadly asexual, despite how much I loved her as a POV character in my teens. But I'll agree that Sebell is even worse.

Meanwhile, someone needs to write me Black Lagoon fic. Or P.C. Hodgell fic. Or something. (I was so pleased with my Legal Drug stocking stuffers last year!)

From: [identity profile] magicnoire.livejournal.com

Dude! I'm trying to write Black Lagoon fic for Kink Bingo & Cliche Bingo. (Gawd, don't laugh at my attempts too much...)

Gods, yes, Sebell was the "safe" guy. Poor Sebell. Even the other two guys in the quartet in Dragonsinger, with far less to say or do, had more personality. Even if I can't remember their names.

(As opposed to the "nice" guy, who is Robinton, ultimately.)

From: [identity profile] mikeda.livejournal.com

Of course, when you have Master Robinton playing matchmaker, the match does tend to get made...

From: [identity profile] branna.livejournal.com

Mirrim/Menolly never occurred to me, but I agree that the Menolly/Sebell pairing has never really worked for me.

Menolly/Robinton, on the other hand----I never believed that it could work if it had gone anywhere, as the potential for disaster and imbalance was immense, but I did believe the emotional resonance.

From: [identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com

It was very emotionally powerful, but I liked it never going anywhere.

Considering how often I drift to anime fanworks over Western fandom fanworks, I'm kind of surprised that my list so far is for the TV show Life--someone's take on the third season that will possibly never be--and for Brust's novels--extrapolation on the future stuff hinted at so far). But there you go.

From: [identity profile] the-xtina.livejournal.com

YES.  MIRRIM WTF.  Just, why?  She started out a little stressed but otherwise fine, and then took a turn for the bitch!  Augh!

From: [identity profile] tavella.livejournal.com

There's a lot of WTF in the later books, and even more WTF if you see interviews with McCaffrey. Golds can only be impressed by "fully female" women (nooooo lesbians! the dragons can smell it on them, icky!), green riders are all gay, or at least get turned gay by being fucked, because there's these *hormones* that get released when they are anally penetratred. She knows, you see, because a friend of hers got raped with a tent peg and turned up gay later!

From: [identity profile] coraa.livejournal.com

Yes! I loved Mirrim, and felt so, well, betrayed by the way she was later treated. Strong female character != bitch! Strong female character != needs to be tamed and dominated by a guy!

(Also, deeply creeped out by the bronzerider who had apparently been 'grooming' her to be his lover from the time she was scarily young.)

I started thinking about this last night, actually. Right now, I'm on a big 'Chess' the musical kick. I'm considering asking for something based on the recent 'definitive' concert version and related to the character Florence because all the fic seems to be about slashing the two male characters and I'd much rather read about the smart, competent woman.

I'm also seriously considering asking for 'Oishinbo' fic. You know, for sheer crack value.

I hadn't thought about it, but I'd probably offer to write it if it were a request. XD

From: [identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com

I'm thinking something centered on the partner/girlfriend/wife character. Particularly her getting to really show off what she knows with extra special bonus points for putting the smackdown on the male leads.

I don't know, I just have this vision of her really wearing the pants in that relationship.

You could be right. Yamaoka strikes me as not having the motivation to actually do anything unless forced to by circumstances.

Oh, man, I think it would be kind of excellent to have Florence and Svetlana run off together at the end.

(I am waiting very impatiently for my local PBS station to show the concert version on Great Performances.)

Re: Mmm, Chess.

After watching Idina Menzel and Kerry Ellis, I can totally buy that.

(I loved the Great Performances showing so much that I went out and bought the 2 CD version of it the next day and am, in fact, listening to it right now.)

WORD on Mirrim.

I've gotten, or written, so many of the fics I've really wanted in the last couple of years that I've got nearly a clean slate this time round, which is both freeing and daunting. I know I want Vorkosigan fic. I think I may request the story where Aral's past catches up with Miles. I don't care how.

I've also got a preliminary list of things that ought to get nominated, dammit, whether I actually want to write them or not. So far all I've got on it is Jokes-- Sven and Ole and Lena (because I really am that Midwestern, apparently), and. Um. The Sime/Gen series. Because vampire tentacle soul-bonding slavefic cold war adventure stories could actually be awesome if the writing didn't suck so very deeply.

I think I read those in high school! You're right, they could have been awesomely idtastic in more skilled hands.

I am personally torn between bailing on Yuletide because of the Fic That Ate Yoon's Brain thing going on right now (17 pages and still my main character has not shown up, and I can't probably get him on-page for another 10--getting into this degree of trouble for Yuletide would be bad) and signing up because OMG I want After School Nightmare Kureha or Sou fic so badly! Or possibly Planescape: Torment, in the hopes that someone will write me Fall-From-Grace. I am even considering something out of Dragonlance, because I love Kitiara.

From: [identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com

You're speaking to the woman who wrote an 8000 word orgy fic last Yuletide. I think you should go for it.

Also, I do plan to offer Dragonlance again.

From: [identity profile] yhlee.livejournal.com

I'm at ~5,000 words and I still haven't gotten to the slash. WTF, brain! If I had gotten to the slash there would at least be Angel/Lindsey to choreograph.

I live in terror that someone will demand that I write actual sex instead of fade-to-black. (The slash in this assignment is something I introduced for...plot considerations. Shoot me now.)

From: [identity profile] magicnoire.livejournal.com

Haha, I was just thinking about this yesterday due to a conversation with [livejournal.com profile] buymeaclue. At the moment, my Yuletide wishlist consists of Jewel/Duster fic from Michelle West's The Hidden City because the world needs more street gang girl member fics and Hunger Games fic about Katniss/(spoiler character from Catching Fire) for the puuuuuuure addictive crack value. Also because Katniss/(spoiler character) is far more interesting than the two canon pairing possibilities for Katniss.

From: [identity profile] magicnoire.livejournal.com

PS

They made a comm for people like us: [livejournal.com profile] catchingfirearc!

Except, I don't really feel like discussing the book and just want to revel in the CRACK that is Katniss/(spoiler character)... and I'm thinking it's not going to happen there given that any relationship discussion will likely focus on Katniss/Peeta & Katniss/Gale.

...and now I will stop hijacking Rachel's comments. orz

The list of things I might request for next Yuletide is growing and now includes more Chinese TV series. I don't think this is a bad thing, but it may make me hard to match. I'm also going to have to cut the list down when it comes time to make requests. I've got six fandoms that I want now. Maybe I need to think about which are likely to get fic that I'll enjoy.

My current list is Condor Hero, Planet Ladder, Ayatsuri Sakon, Slan by A.E. van Vogt (prompted by seeing that there's a hack sequel coming out that I expect to be painfully bad), Romance of Red Dust and The Handsome Siblings. I don't think anything's coming off the list just yet, and I may well add to it between now and fall.

Oooo! I want Sun Shangxiang fic as well for Red Cliff! And um, more Sancia/Alfonso ah hahaha. And original Night World fic! And spoilery Vampire Knight fic! And Ki and Vandien!

It is crazy to say that I want someone to rewrite The Secret Sharer with a completely different secret sharer? I'm not sure anybody's ever done Conrad for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide.

From: [identity profile] veejane.livejournal.com

A novella by Joseph Conrad. It's about an unsure-of-himself ship's captain who runs across a fugitive and harbors that fugitive for no reason. I'm feeling my way through a long, drawn-out psychohistory of Conrad at the moment (and especially his treatment of race adn globalism), and I wondered suddenly while reading one of his other novels what The Secret Sharer would have been like if the (white) fugitive had been an Indian or a black man.

I have started keeping a file of potential fandoms so I don't forget! Thus, I cut and paste:

L.J. Smith, Night World
Phantom Dream

The Decemberists, The Hazards of Love
What happens to Margaret and William's child? Does it become the Forest Queen's next son? What would it be like if Margaret were the forest's daughter and William was the river's son? What happened afterwards? How did the Queen meet the Rake? Set the story somewhere and somewhen else.

Nightschool
Constantine
Gabriel after the fall

From: [identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com

What is Nightschool?

The Decemberists thing sounds great. Do you have to see the show, or can you just buy the album?

You can just buy the album. It's awesome.

Nightschool is the latest manga by Svetlana Chamkova of Dramacon. Big ensemble piece. I'm digging the setup so far.

There cannot be enough Zhuge Liang fic!

From: [identity profile] rushthatspeaks.livejournal.com

Now that I've read v.7 of Mushishi I desperately want OT3 fic based on 'The Ragged Road'. I may end up not being able to wait and writing it myself, though.

Apart from that, I still want the particular Dorothy Sayers femmeslash no one is ever going to write me.

From: [identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com

I kind of want fic for Contract Killer and Mysterious Skin. Movies have been eating my brain lately.
seajules: (soul food)

From: [personal profile] seajules

I want fic for Bride of the Water God that brings in more Korean mythology and challenges the gender roles in culturally appropriate ways. I want Moulin Rouge fic that doesn't villainize or ignore Satine to hook Christian up with the Argentinian and which plays with the connections to the Orphean myth. I would kind of madly adore fic rooted in various murder ballads. Some good seaQuest or Dark Angel would also be welcome.
