Yesterday, while so many people I know were out there protesting, (which I think is awesome and something I would have liked to have done), I was getting dressed for and attending a three-hour celebration of life for a neighbor. (Technically the 37-year old daughter of a neighbor, but a “kid” who lived near us until her college time.) My daughter, MermaidFan, was a friend of her sister’s, and all these girls began their early years in the same day care center before advancing on to K-12 school together. In other words, we all go way back.
The gathering was amazing. The afternoon was filled with beauty, magic, warm hugs, a few laughs, music and excellent eulogy-type speeches. A quartet of singers, opened the celebration with a lovely rendition of Sting’s “Fields of Gold”, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLVq0IAzh1A), and eight presenters, including the deceased’s mom, dad, sister, aunt and three friends spoke. One friend shared memories from their childhoods. One reflected on their college years and the third basically gave tribute to the whole family and their overall kindness without judgement toward anyone who needed something.
What impressed me most of all was the fact that once you became a friend of this family, and especially the deceased sister, you became a forever friend. You became a 100%, all-the-time, important person in her eyes and that would never change. Even though I personally didn’t know “M” as well as I knew the younger sister and their mom, I lament the fact that this family is no longer complete. It happened too soon. It’s one of those, “I can’t even” things. After losing one of my own sisters in April, this hits harder than I expected.
“M” was only 37, but she’d led a full life of learning, reading, diverse friendships, fine food, fandoms, travel, career success and love. Her time was too short, but she lived her life well.
You can’t do better than that.

My best guess is during his conversation with Logan. When he says "Maybe I deserve it", I think he is still at least seriously considering with cooperating with his father's plans. But when he kisses his father after Logan is adamant that Kendall doesn't deserve it - well, that kiss seems very Judas-y to me.
When Logan dismissed Andrew Dodds' death as "no real person involved" - I think that was the moment Ken decided to turn against his father (although he may have been thinking about it before). Kendall has a lot of different reactions to the fact the he committed vehicular manslaughter over the course of the show. This includes frequently being adamant it never happened. But he never said that Andrew's life lacked value.

Followed the path beside the River Frome down to Swineham, through the reedbeds, where the breeze sets the whole landscape in motion, and you walk in a world of half-seen things and unseen things. The rattle of dragonfly flight, and a glint of sunlight on wings. The endless pent-up grumbling ("And another thing...") song of Reed Warblers. A black-capped Reed Bunting clinging to a reed as it sways back and forth in the wind - now you see it, now you don't.
( Don't get your hopes up. It's hard to photograph half-seen things... )
so i defaulted on fandom5k. there were a couple of requests i was like 65% enthused about, but as i am now i don't want to commit to something i'm less then 90% enthused about. especially for a 5k fic! so yeah. i think it was the right call. (i still owe comments on my fandom5k gifts from the last round OTL)
battleshipex is staring up again soon, and i've definitely got my eye on it :D
i have a barebones sign-up to justmarriedexchange rn.
on friday, i streamed Cult of the Lamb for a few hours on my new twitch channel bogwyrm. i haven't streamed nor played COTL in like a year, and i forgot how much i love it. depression blinders, you know?
but i like streaming bc i like even the illusion of company (even if nobody's actually watching), it just makes gaming more fun to me, you know. and COTL is one of my favorite games. i started a new playthrough bc it's been so long and just... so much fun! i'm gonna try to stream again tomorrow (monday) bc then i'm going to my mom's place and i can't stream there. i would love it if you felt like stopping by! <3
anyway, i hope y'all are having/had a fun weekend! <3
The actors all have the usual problem in a movie about amateur theatre, which is figuring out just how well or how badly their characters should deliver their lines in the scenes where they’re rehearsing. I did end up thinking that this church-hall production of Salome has some awfully good sets, given what they have to work with—but I’ve seen that happen in real life. There’s a gag midway through about the shop sending them the wrong costumes, but later we see the wardrobe mistress working at a sewing machine and I think we saw her running about earlier with a sequinned gown. Maybe we’re meant to assume hiring costumes was a stop-gap measure that didn’t work out.
The movie’s own wardrobe people did pretty well on the early-‘60s costumes—I think a few of the hairstyles were softened from what you see in photos of the time, but that usually happens. The extras in what you eventually realize is the local gay bar, where Alfie tries lurking nervously and later tries cruising with disastrous results, wear pretty standard menswear for the era and signal subtly. When Alfie swans in cosplaying Wilde, it does not go well. Our protagonist is almost more asexual/homoromantic than anything else, but it’s hard to tell how much of that is innate, and how much is the result of nothing all these years but his collection of Wilde to advise him. None of the other characters seem to suspect his homosexuality until the third act, but all of them comment on his naïveté.
”He’s a great sinner.”
”He’s a terrible director, but I’m stayin’.”
Curious as to how it would hit if you weren’t familiar with the life and works of Oscar Wilde, because some of the allusions were spelt out but some (Alfie referring to Robbie as “Bosie”, looking up at the stars after getting mugged, his defiant speech to the bus inspector that’s taken straight from the transcript of one of Wilde’s trials) weren’t. Not complaining, I think they work better if the script doesn’t hit you over the head (with this, anyway—the villains are not exactly written subtly, though they’re played with flair, especially by Michael Gambon).
We are in Eureka Springs Arkansas! Today is Sunday and the show with my queens is tonight. We flew in yesterday since we knew it would be a hike.
All has been really good so far. Flight was easy, and then it was a one hour drive in a rental car. There were twists and turns in the road, and we were high up and there was very little shoulder on the road. It was a wee bit scary but Doris handled it like a champ.
It's Pride weekend here and all I can say is that the town is adorable. LGBTQI+ people everywhere (though....mostly white I guess since we're in Arkansas, and this place isn't easy to get to. Probably expensive too, given the surrounding areas). It's scenic with tall hills (mountains?) and stunning rock walls.
Our hotel is right in the downtown. The downtown is much like Savannah or Madison - lots of cute shops, Pride flags everywhere, very walkable. The hotel is OMG so old-fashioned, like something you would've seen decades ago. Creaky wooden floors, antique touches, an AC window unit. Lots of "character" and such a change after the cookie-cutter hotels I usually stay in. (Also, given the landscape, the floor is slightly tilted! We are not in the flat midwest). But it's nice. And quiet too. Found a restaurant that had 2 vegan items on the menu; dinner there was good and we sat on the balcony outside. And we found a cafe where the owner (? or manager?) said they open at 10am today and will gladly make us vegan burritos or a vegan scramble.
The show tonight is Lydia, Kori and Suzie. Yesterday there was a show with "just" Lydia. We didn't plan to go since we knew there was no guarantee we'd get in on time. But we made it, so on spur of the moment we decided to walk there and ask if there were tickets left. There were not. Oh well. More rest time, which I can't complain of. Pretty excited for tonight - AND they just announced a new Lydia/Kori/Suzie show in October in Atlanta. Yes, I am going. (Maybe i should invite my sister - she is about 2 hours from Atlanta).
And unlike the show in New York - where it took 45 minutes to go 2.5 miles from the hotel to the venue - the venue is literally a 5 minute walk from our hotel!
My fandom bestie lives in the Middle East and her city is being bombed. I am here for this fun weekend, while she has to deal with this. I am so sad at this world.
