Not Love, But Delicious Foods Make Me So Happy! is an autobiographical single-volume manga about the adventures of foodie and manga artist/writer Fumi Yoshinaga, with real names “disguised” in abbreviations. Or, as she describes herself on page one, F-mi Y-naga. A thirty-one-year-old female who makes her living by drawing men engaging in anal sex.
Her platonic best buddy and assistant S-Hara, plus assorted friends, accompany her on gluttonous trips around Tokyo for slice-of-life vignettes based around lovingly described meals, concluding in directions to the restaurants, all of which are real.
Yoshinaga’s self-deprecating and politically incorrect sense of humor, and her love for food and Tokyo play out in scenes in which she has an awkward first date with a man who is tragically uninterested in food, goes out with a female friend whose appetite rivals her own, and has an even more awkward outing with a friend who, it turns out, everyone but she knew was gay, prompting a slightly hysterical apology from Yoshinaga for appropriating gay culture in her manga. (“I’m sorry!” Bow. “I’m sorry!” Bow. “I’m so sorry!”)
You can probably tell from the description whether you’ll love this or whether it will bore you stiff. Unsurprisingly, I loved it.
