Those of you who already know can skip this post.

For those of you who don't know or only found out when I mentioned it yesterday, I am dating an absolutely fabulous guy named Adrian Villareal and have been for the last month or so. He is a former Air Force medic and a current first-year medical student. He's one year younger than me and most recently from Denver, CO. We met on itsjustcoffee.com.

He likes Neil Gaiman, George R. R. Martin, martial arts, video games, sf, dressing up for Ren Faire, hiking, children, NPR (National Public Radio), emergency medicine, anime, cooking, eating, Asian food and culture, reading aloud, and me!

He is the first man in five or so years to get past a first date with me, so clearly he is very special.

Unlike every man I've ever dated, neither emergencies nor the word "emotion" scare him one little bit. I think his theme song is Bruce Springsteen's "Tougher Than The Rest."

I could go on and on, but I will confine myself to a story which, again, some of you have already heard, about that thing that happened on our second date.

I was attempting to cuddle up to him in a surreptitious manner. I don't know why I thought the stealth was necessary; I'd instantly sat down on the sofa in the hope that he would then have to sit down beside me. Instead, he'd looked down at the sofa and the teeny chair beside it and said, "May I sit next to you?" I said, "Well, I wasn't going to make you sit in the hobbit chair." He laughed.

Anyway, we're on the sofa together, I am furtively leaning into him, and then...

Adrian (suddenly): "Are you all right?"

Me: "Uh... yeah."

Adrian: "Are you sure? You're not having an allergic reaction or something?"

Me: "What are you talking about?"

Adrian: "Well, you started breathing really fast... and you still are."

Me: (pause, thinking, "Is he for real? And also, how the hell do I phrase this?")

Me (with as much dignity as I can muster): "Um... that's because I think you're hot."

Adrian: "Oh! Um. Wow. Of course! Man, medical school can really make you overlook the obvious."

Last weekend we went to the Labyrinth-themed party, the Masquerade of Jareth, in Ren Faire-ish outfits and Carnivalesque face paint. I will post pictures when I get them from him.
