Wow! Thank you so much to everyone who sent me birthday wishes, and mega-thank you to the awesome crew who gave me certificates for massages and amazon! You guys are fantastic!
Adrian took me to breakfast at the same Taiwanese place across from Din Tai Fung where he got me the taro/red bean cake, and we had a Taiwanese picnic in the Arboretum, where we ended up at a picnic table after repeated attempts to sit on the ground were foiled by ants. We had coffee, sticky rice stuffed with sausage and assorted good stuff, radish cakes with egg, beef rolls, "dragon tails" (crispy unsweetened churro-like things), and "multi-grain rolls" which Adrian unwisely ordered in the hope of being healthy. We fed those to a peacock. Then we went to Huntington Gardens, which was extremely hot but very relaxing.
I am briefly peeking into LJ while he is at a tutoring session, but am now leaving to read L J Smith. We will eat the cake when he returns. Bye!

Adrian just called to say this: "I was planning to subtly interrogate you to find something out, but I couldn't figure out how, so can I just ask you something?"
Me (Oh God, what new crisis could this be?): "...Sure."
Adrian: "I'm at the Chinese bakery and I can't remember which cake you made you jump up and down last time. Was it the taro with vanilla pudding, or the taro with red bean?"

Adrian likes anime, but had not yet read any manga-- until I gave him volume 1 of Monster. After the obligatory few pages of disorientation via unfamiliar reading orientation, he was completely sucked into the clever plotting and generally correct medical details (though he is still trying to figure out what medical instrument was translated as "spatula.") I have promised to loan him the rest of the series (as far as I have it, anyway.)
He also loved His Majesty's Dragon -- another gift from me.
I just packed him off to the airport for a week-long trip to Denver, along with my final gift, Young Miles, which constitutes The Warrior's Apprentice, The Vor Game, and "The Mountains of Mourning." When I described it to him, he said that he thinks his best buddy Jarrad, who was an Air Force medic with him, had recced it to him before. My mention of "Camp Permafrost" rang a bell, as apparently that was Jarrad's nickname for some godforsaken base in North Dakota.

1.
livelongnmarry has raised over $43,000 -- and is still counting!
2. Someone tipped off George Takei and Brad Altman, and they sent us a message of thanks and support!
3. Adrian: still awesomest boyfriend ever.
4. I have trimmed and dyed my hair red. Well, red-brown. It looks good, if I do say so myself.
5. Virginia Avenue Project summer camp is this weekend. I am not sure if I'll internet access or not, so if you desperately need me between Thursday and Sunday, call.

Adrian and I went to the Masquerade of Jareth, a public party based on the movie Labyrinth. It was a bit like a con and a bit like Ren Faire and a bit like the Faerie party in Emma Bull's War For The Oaks.
Adrian's outfit, except for the riding boots which he owns, was from a costume rental shop. Mine was borrowed from Sherwood, except for the shirt which was borrowed from Halle.
ETA: Huh, I don't seem to have any full-body ones. I'll look again when I post more.
A friend of mine did our face makeup. I thought she did a beautiful job. Although several days and showers later, we were both still covered in glitter. I told Adrian about Stephanie Meyer's sparkly vampires. A while later, we were walking in the sun when he peered at me and said, "Your ears are still vampiric."
Behold! Pirate Adrian and Phoenix Rachel!

For those of you who don't know or only found out when I mentioned it yesterday, I am dating an absolutely fabulous guy named Adrian Villareal and have been for the last month or so. He is a former Air Force medic and a current first-year medical student. He's one year younger than me and most recently from Denver, CO. We met on itsjustcoffee.com.
He likes Neil Gaiman, George R. R. Martin, martial arts, video games, sf, dressing up for Ren Faire, hiking, children, NPR (National Public Radio), emergency medicine, anime, cooking, eating, Asian food and culture, reading aloud, and me!
He is the first man in five or so years to get past a first date with me, so clearly he is very special.
Unlike every man I've ever dated, neither emergencies nor the word "emotion" scare him one little bit. I think his theme song is Bruce Springsteen's "Tougher Than The Rest."
I could go on and on, but I will confine myself to a story which, again, some of you have already heard, about that thing that happened on our second date.
