My latest book nook, a homage to Stephen King's Dark Tower. Make sure you click through to see ALL the photos.
This was a gift for
scioscribe, along with an accompanying set of figurines, most of which I unfortunately failed to photograph before mailing them. Maybe she will put up her own pics (hint, hint.) It's about 98% complete in these photos--everything done except for sealing and painting over the edges where I cut the cardboard.
Like my hair, many details are only visible in person.
The bloody footprints were made by dipping the feet of a figurine in the same paint I used for the drip-down on the wall.
The ghost girl is a figurine of an ordinary girl that I painted. All girls become ghosts when you drain out all the colors but red.
I did the creepy faces by cutting out black and white photos from magazines, painting over them and letting them dry, gluing them to the floor and walls and ceiling, and then painting over them again to make them blend in. Some are easier to see than others.
The last face in the set is completely invisible looking at the nook straight on, then seems to leap out at you if you turn your head and look from the side. I intended it as a jump scare, but it ended up so much more effective than I had imagined. To be honest I was kind of glad to have it out of my house as it kept jumping out at me and unnerving me while I was trying to work on other things.

My instant reaction was that they also become ghosts if you drain all the red out of them, which is a case of my own brain managing to spook me.

(I have no artistic talent but I did back a Kickstarter for a book nook that finally arrived a few weeks ago; it’s an alleyway in Japan, using an angled mirror to make it look like it keeps going - will try and post photos)
