In honor of the upcoming International Pixel-Stained Technopeasant Wretch Day, I will now post the "manga scarf script" for the benefit of the two, count 'em, two brave or strange people who voted for it. The poll is still open below for the actual day! Make your vote count!

I was comissioned a while back by a clothing company to write a manga which would be printed on a scarf, in a long line of panels. The concept was that they would do a series of different scarves with interconnecting stories. However, the artist only ever turned in three panels, and the entire project proved to be too expensive, so it never happened and the script reverted back to me.

If anyone would like to take this and draw it, you may do so as long as you credit me as the writer and let me know you're doing it. It was not broken into pages due to the nature of the project, but I think it would be about 6-10.

The concept, which would have been apparent had we done a whole series of scarves, was that Raziel and Suriel are angels. They would appear in all of the scarves. But they wouldn’t always look the same— their race will be different, sometimes they’ll be two men or two women, and so forth. (Their personalities stay the same.) But no matter what they look like, Raziel always wears a ring with a red gem stone, and Suriel always wears a ring with a green gem stone. The stones in their rings are pieces of Heaven, and the angels are searching for the other lost pieces of Heaven.



Panel 1: A Japanese woman’s face. She is in her early twenties, a solemn young businesswoman. This is Raziel.

Raziel’s thought balloon: Sometimes I feel like I’ve forgotten where I come from.

Panel 2: A wider view shows that Raziel is looking in a mirror in a women’s bathroom in the department store attached to Shinjuku station. She’s putting on makeup. There’s other women in the room. We should see Raziel’s ring, with the red stone, as she puts on lipstick.

Raziel’s thought balloon: It seems so long ago.

Panel 3: Raziel walks through the department store crowds.

Sound effect (her high-heeled shoes): tap-tap, tap-tap…

Raziel’s thought balloon: I try not to touch anyone. But people are so close in the city.

Raziel’s thought balloon: Sometimes I’m curious. Sometimes I’m lonely.

Panel 4: Raziel’s hand brushes that of a middle-aged salaryman in a suit. There is a flash of light where their hands touch.

Panel 5: Raziel sees the salaryman’s secret: Inside one of those big wooden boxes covered in blue plastic wrap that homeless people live in, the “salaryman” sits huddled in a blanket, drinking a bottle of cheap liquor. His suit, which seems to be the only other thing he owns, is folded neatly on top of a newspaper.

Panel 6: Raziel and the homeless “salaryman” continue walking past each other.

Raziel’s thought balloon: But that’s not why I was sent here.

Panel 7: Raziel looks at beautifully arranged mochi in the department store basement.

Raziel’s thought balloon: I sleep, I speak, I eat.

Panel 8: Close-up on the mochi. It’s spring, so they’re shaped like spring leaves and flowers and cherry blossoms and so forth. It’s a beautiful display.

Raziel’s thought balloon: Sometimes I wonder if I remember how to fly.

Speech balloon (from person we can’t yet see in this panel): Ooh! Sakura mochi!

Panel 9: Suriel, a young, handsome salaryman in a suit, steps up next to Raziel.

Suriel’s speech balloon: Two, please.

Raziel: I don’t want any.

Panel 10: Suriel stuffs a mochi in his mouth. We can see the green ring on his finger.

Suriel: …We should have a picnic… Mmph… The cherries are blooming in Shinjuku Park…

Sound effect: chomp chomp

Panel 11: Raziel lifts her hand to show Suriel her ring. The stone in her ring is glowing. If we can see Suriel’s ring, it’s glowing too.

Raziel: The fragment’s nearby. That’s what we’re here to get, so let’s get it.

Panel 14: Raziel follows Suriel along the subway platform. It’s crowded. She has her arms crossed tightly across her chest.

Raziel’s thought balloon: I don’t want to know your secrets. I wasn’t sent here to save you. Don’t touch me.

Panel 15: A thirty-something woman, Haruko, brushes against Raziel. There’s a flash of light where skin touches skin.

Panel 16: Against a background of white, Haruko is falling though the air. This is Raziel’s vision of what Haruko is planning to do.

Panel 17: Back to the subway platform. Haruko pulls away from Raziel.

Haruko: Excuse me.

Panel 18: Raziel stares at Haruko.

Panel 19: Suriel, who is kneeling on the platform, holds up a beautiful blue gem.

Suriel: I found it!

Suriel: It was under—

Panel 20: Haruko stands on the edge of the platform. Raziel is not in this panel.

Raziel’s speech balloon: Excuse me! Ma’am!

Panel 21: Haruko turns to see Raziel standing nearby, holding up the blue gem.

Panel 22: Close-up of the gem, with Haruko’s face reflected in it.

Panel 23: Close-up of the gem, now showing the face of a little girl, five or six years old.

Panel 24: The little girl runs through a field of flowers, cupping something in her hands. She looks happy.

Little girl: Mama! Mama! Look what I found!

Panel 25: Back on the subway platform, Haruko stares at Raziel. Suriel has come up beside them.

Suriel: You’re not going to let your daughter grow up without a mother, are you?

Panel 26: Just on Haruko.

Haruko: I don’t have children.

Panel 27: The little girl in the field of flowers. This time we can see what she has in her hands: a tiny green frog. We don’t see her mother.

Little girl: See, mama? It’s so cute!

Panel 28: Back to Haruko and the angels at the subway station.

Haruko: I was that little girl. It seems so long ago.

Haruko: How could I harm that beautiful child?

Panel 29: The subway train pulls into the station.

Panel 30: Haruko steps through the doors, into the subway car.

Panel 31: Raziel and Suriel watch the subway pull out of the station.

Suriel: We can walk to Shinjuku Park from here. They say the cherries are in full bloom.

Panel 32: The view from inside the subway station, looking out through the entrance. Framed by the subway station entrance, we see cherry blossoms.
