King of Exchanges is open! It's full of great stuff! Enjoy!

Stories and art from The Breathing Method, Carrie, Dark Tower, Holly Gibney, Misery, Rose Madder, Salem's Lot, and The Stand.

"The Breathing Method" is a non-canonized tag so here's a direct link for that story. You actually don't need to know canon to read it, other than that it's set in a gentleman's club where they tell spooky stories. The Man Who Came Downstairs.
Signups for [community profile] kingofexchanges close today at at midnight EST.

You will need a minimum of three different Stephen King canons to request and offer (requests and offers do not need to be the same). Nominations are running concurrently with signups, so if what you want isn't in the tagset, you can add it.

Schedule:
Aug 21: Sign-Ups & Nominations Close
Aug 23 (or earlier): Assignments Go Out
October 1: Assignments Due
October 8: Work Reveals
October 15: Creator Reveals

Everything at 8:00 PM EST.
Thank you for writing for me!

My requests are for fic, but if anyone feels moved to make me an art treat, I would be delighted.

For any prompts where I say it would be OK to mix-and-match the character sets, or if it would make sense to include more characters in your story, feel free to include any characters from any of the fandoms I nominated characters from.

I would be happy with a story of any length, from an epic to 500 words exactly. Of course, as a King fan, I adore long stories. However, some of my favorite exchange stories are extremely short, and that length is especially good for horror. So seriously: anything is fine.

If you'd like to do a crossover that isn't requested, go for it. I'm always happy to see characters or canon from Carrie, Cujo, The Dead Zone, Doctor Sleep (book or movie), Dolores Claiborne, Duma Key, Firestarter, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, the Holly Gibney books (but I haven't read "If It Bleeds" yet), The Institute, It, The Langoliers, Later, Lisey's Story, The Long Walk, Misery, Needful Things, Pet Sematary, Rose Madder, Salem's Lot, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Shining.

[community profile] kingofexchanges, a low-minimum (300 words or a sketch) exchange for all things Stephen King. Sign ups will close on Aug. 21 at 8:00PM EST.

You can still nominate during the sign-up period. I am going to do that myself.
King of Exchanges, the exchange for Stephen King works modded by myself and [personal profile] scioscribe, is open for nominations! It's a small but disproportionately enjoyable exchange, if I do say so myself.

In other horror news, I wrote two stories for Multifandom Horror.

Annihilation (Movie). Refraction, for Prox (Amber). The Shimmer seduces Lena.

Original Fiction. Creepy Dollies Creeping on Little Dollie Feet, for sweetcarolanne. Die Hard, but with haunted dolls.
Thank you so much to everyone who participated! I love this little exchange.

I wrote three stories.

The Stand.

Stop, Hey What's That Sound. The Tattered Remnants' final tour.

I think this could possibly be read without fandom knowledge. It's about the world's worst international band tour.

This story was for [personal profile] maidenjedi, who had absolutely fantastic prompts - I really regretted only having time to write one. This one was for "What if Flagg engineers the end of the world some other way, and the Tattered Remnants are along for the ride?" [personal profile] sholio and [personal profile] scioscribe helped me come up with assorted disasters - the cobra, the rabies outbreak, the biker gang security, and the football hooligans were theirs. I had a slightly disturbing amount of fun writing this story.

Doctor Sleep (Movie). A pair of short fics. Warning, both are EXTREMELY dark.

Eat Well. Rose the Hat, through the years.

Smudges. Rose the Hat/Danny Torrance. Blood shines at night.

I really liked the movie, which riffs cleverly on the Kubrick The Shining and has an astonishing performance by Rebecca Ferguson as Rose the Hat that gave me all sorts of disturbing new kinks.

Recs

The Stars Did Wander Darkling, by [personal profile] maidenjedi - The Stand. A gorgeous, haunting story of survivors after the plague... and their dream. This was my gift and I absolutely loved it.

Lower Animals., by [personal profile] scioscribe - The Stand/Salem's Lot Susan Delgado/Susan Norton. A beautifully written crossover in which the two Susans meet.

Misery Redux, by [personal profile] cyphomandra - Misery. Absolutely amazing metafiction on Misery and Misery, complex and clever and beautifully plotted.

can't start a fire without a spark, by [personal profile] scioscribe - Dark Tower. Roland/Eddie. I can't do better than quote the synopsis: I have not forgotten the songs of my junkie boyfriend. A Time Life Collection, only $9.99.

fears that I may cease to be, by [profile] stripysock - The Long Walk. McVries/Garraty. Great McVries voice, lots of excellent turns of phrase.

As Blue, by [profile] ninetysixtears The Shawshank Redemption. Andy/Red. A lovely, serene post-movie get-together.

I need you next to me then I'm gone, by [personal profile] janie_tangerine - It. Ben/Beverly, the no-forgetting happy ending we all needed.

Moments in Time, by [personal profile] reeby10 - Doctor Sleep (Movie). Danny Torrance/Billy Freeman. A heartwarming get-together.

I didn't read these as I'm not familiar with canon. But the writers are really good!

Dark Stripes, by [personal profile] scioscribe - The Talisman. Years later, the weight of the events of The Talisman catches up with Jack, and this time it's Richard who has to find something in the Territories that will help ease his pain.

Wanderlust, by [personal profile] cygnes - Castle Rock (TV). Every so often, the Devil comes out of the woods by Castle Lake. He never comes to stay.

Or: Henry Deaver learns about doorways between worlds, and how to open them.

King of Exchanges, the Stephen King fic exchange, is open for reading!

We have 13 stories in 11 fandoms, and everything I've read so far is GREAT. I'm not doing specific recs till after reveals, as the collection is so small and the stories are so good that it would de-anon me - I'd end up reccing everything I didn't write in the fandoms I know.

Seriously, if you have any interest in any of the fandoms represented, you need to check out this collection.

Last night I dreamed that exchange gifts needed to be picked up in person, and the location was assigned by mods. When the exchange opened, I discovered that the gift stories I'd written had been placed inside a local vacant lot, which can only be accessed by squeezing through a locked gate. I was very worried that my recipients would be unable to get to their gifts.

But luckily, the bar to entry is much lower than that. Here are two exchanges you may want to check out:

Signups/nominations for [community profile] kingofexchanges, the Stephen King exchange modded by myself, [personal profile] sholio, and [personal profile] scioscribe, close tomorrow night. Come on in!

Eat, Drink, and Make Merry, a food-and-drink centered exchange, is open! The archive is full of stories in many fandoms, and also original works.

I got three wonderful, long, juicy, tasty, and satisfying stories.

Original Works:

On Schedule. An original story for my request for Avant-Garde Food Truck Chef/Traditional Food Truck Chef, an utterly delightful and often hilarious story set in an extremely recognizable Los Angeles, complete with edible receipts, TikTok-obsessed younger brothers, and avant-garde, Instagram-ready rectangular banh mi.

Torchwood:

I got two lovely stories based on the same prompt. I love it when that happens - it's endlessly fascinating to me to see different takes on the same prompt. Both stories are inventive, clever, funny, heartwarming, and full of team love and food descriptions. They're also extremely spoilery for a canon development late-ish in the show, so don't click if you don't want to be spoiled.

A Lifetime of Pomegranates

Mary Celeste

[community profile] kingofexchanges is open for signups and nominations! (We decided to do them simultaneously this year.)

The tag set is here. Take a look at what's already nominated, and add whatever you like. All Stephen King-related canons are eligible.

I'm modding the exchange, along with [personal profile] sholio and [personal profile] scioscribe. We had a wonderful time with it last year, and it produced some great stories that I still re-read. Come on in! The water's fine. Except for the thing lurking at the bottom...

Who's going to do it this year?
A Life on the Road, a crossover of The Stand and The Long Walk.

So happy we created King of Exchanges! It was a fantastic experience and I'm already looking forward to doing it again next year.
King of Exchanges, the Stephen King exchange that [personal profile] sholio and [personal profile] scioscribe and I modded, is OPEN! Read and enjoy. It has works in 11/22/63, Carrie, Dark Tower, The Dead Zone, Dolores Claiborne, Gerald's Game, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, IT, The Long Walk, and The Stand.

All the stories I've read so far have been fantastic, and many of the stories focus on rarely-ficced works or unusual crossovers. It's a really awesome and special exchange if I do say so myself.

[personal profile] scioscribe and I had never run a fic exchange before, but we really wanted to make this happen. Enter [personal profile] sholio, who helped us navigate AO3's less-than-intuitively obvious framework for running exchanges. Thank you SO MUCH.

I got two absolutely incredible stories.

The Once and Future Prince - Gerald's Game. I wanted a fix-it for Prince, the abandoned stray dog. I got a story that 100% satisfied on that level, and was beautifully written to boot.

Some Find Solace - Carrie, Dark Tower, Dolores Claiborne, Gerald's Game, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. For my prompt that a different group of characters - in this case, four generations of women and girls - become a ka-tet in Mid-World. This story is epic and wonderful and I can't praise it enough. I felt like I was reading a piece of an alternate Dark Tower itself.
Stephen King exchange (books, movies, TV series, etc), only 500 word minimum for fic, last chance to sign up is tonight at 11:59 EDT!

If you want to add tags, comment here or PM one of the mods to do so.

Tagset here. If there's something you'd like to add to the tagset, please contact the mods and we can manually add it for you. Note that a number of fandoms are listed as "uncategorized" as they do not yet have any fic on AO3.

Who here is planning to participate?
[personal profile] scioscribe, [personal profile] sholio, and I are the mods of a new exchange for Stephen King fanworks, [community profile] kingofexchanges!

It covers all works by Stephen King or based on something by Stephen King. It's for art and fic, and the minimum fic length is 500 words.

It includes crossover fandoms, and that part is set up so you can nominate all sorts of varieties of those, from characters meeting each other (Jessie Burlingame and Dolores Claiborne meet in person) to placing a character from one book in the world of another (Lisey in 'Salem's Lot, presumably bashing the vampires with a shovel) to putting a whole set of characters together (Danny Torrance, Trisha McFarland, Charlie McGee, and Carrie White become a ka-tet in Mid-World).

Come on in, the water's fine! Except for the monster lurking beneath the surface.
