I was taken out by some friends for a pre-birthday celebration last night at Nanbankan, a Japanese restaurant that serves little things on skewers. I am pleased to note that the weird thing that's been going on for, I don't know, at least six months, where if I have even one alcoholic drink at night, I suddenly become wide awake at 3:00 AM for at least an hour no longer applies, even though I had something like four glasses of Sapporo. Perhaps I need to drink more? I am not half as hung over as I would have expected, either.

More of a laundry list than food porn, but I have to get on a freeway ASAP: plump little sausages with mustard, gobo wrapped in thin crispy pork, corn on the cob brushed with butter and a bit of soy sauce, tiny aoft-boiled skewered quail eggs, sweet salt-broiled onions, deliciously fatty belly pork, garlic shoots (scarps?) sauteed with sliced button mushrooms and little scallops, roast quail, cod with miso, perfect little lamb chops marinated in garlic, whole roast garlic, broiled yellowtail collar, several varieties of yaki onigiri, and lichi ice cream. And four glasses of Sapporo.

One of the guests is from Okinawa, and informed me that Tokyo in August is not half as unpleasantly hot and muggy as people claim, and urged me to go for Worldcon as long as I am not afraid of typhoons. She also rather crushed me by being unable to understand any of the handy phrases I learned from Fullmetal Alchemist, including the title of the show, and suggested that I work on pronunciation. (Although she did hazard "equal trade?" for "touka koukan.")
