You have probably all heard of (and heard, and committed) mondegreens: misheard song lyrics, or occasionally misheard non-song phrases, such as my own childhood mystification over the phrase in the pledge of allegiance, "one nation, indivisible invisible." I finally concluded that it was visible from the inside, as I could see for myself, but invisible from the outside.

Also, just for the record, I was correct when I thought that Bruce Springsteen was far too classy to sing the line, "I grabbed you, baby, like a wild bitch," especially in a love song to his wife. The word is pitch. (Not one of his more inspired lyrics.)

And in the Flash Girls' lovely song "Death on Hennepin," I always thought it was odd that the girl tries to bargain with Death by suggesting that instead of her, he take "some young pothead with a gun." How strange, I thought. Potheads are not typically armed and dangerous. Hotheads, however, may well be.

Anyway, only today did I learn that there is also a word for this phenomena in Japanese, complete with amusing examples:
