You have probably all heard of (and heard, and committed) mondegreens: misheard song lyrics, or occasionally misheard non-song phrases, such as my own childhood mystification over the phrase in the pledge of allegiance, "one nation, indivisible invisible." I finally concluded that it was visible from the inside, as I could see for myself, but invisible from the outside.

Also, just for the record, I was correct when I thought that Bruce Springsteen was far too classy to sing the line, "I grabbed you, baby, like a wild bitch," especially in a love song to his wife. The word is pitch. (Not one of his more inspired lyrics.)

And in the Flash Girls' lovely song "Death on Hennepin," I always thought it was odd that the girl tries to bargain with Death by suggesting that instead of her, he take "some young pothead with a gun." How strange, I thought. Potheads are not typically armed and dangerous. Hotheads, however, may well be.

Anyway, only today did I learn that there is also a word for this phenomena in Japanese, complete with amusing examples:

From The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand"

I want to hold your hand
アホな放尿犯
Aho na hōnyōhan
The fool is committing the crime of public urination.

!

Now the theme song for Azu Manga Daioh makes sense!

Thank you for the enlightenment. My day has not been a karmic waste.

Speaking of Bruce Springsteen (via Manfred Mann):

"Wrapped up like a douche, another roaner in the night..."

Not.

Wait, that wasn't "loaner?" I thought maybe his car broke down on the way to Walgreen's to buy the... Oh, never mind.

Oh, for awesome.

Also, dammitall, the line in the middle of the Simon & Garfunkel song Cecelia is, in fact, "I fall on the floor and I lactate." It's the only thing that makes sense grammatically...

"...Are you sure you've never honed in on an important point or goal? Given free reign to your creativity, or, on the contrary, towed the line? Check out what the man has to say whose refrigerator has given up the goat, so brilliantly retold by Jeanette Winterson in the (London) Times."

Oh, man, I feel my life was quieter and not half as fun before I discovered the Japanese term. And the examples. O god.
