Can anyone think of anything positive, either in their own lives or in the world at large? If so, tell me! I don't mean happy kitty photos (unless they're of your own kitty who makes you happy) but actual events or news that doesn't suck.
Yesterday we found a decent little computer desk for A., so now instead of hunching over the coffeetable he can both write by hand and use his laptop, and he's done more writing today than he has in ages and is so, so happy and comfortable. I've been using the only desk for months because my laptop hinge is broken and it has to be propped up on a wall, and he's been miserable. Also now we're near each other and don't have to yell across the room. It's awesome.
There are Christmas lights in the windows of all the flats in the university accommodation and walking up the hill home, you can see sparkling colours and snowflake cut-outs, with Christmas trees behind them. Also, snow is due.
The Same-Sex Relationships (Equal Treatment in Commonwealth Laws Superannuation) Bill 2008 passed through parliament November 24 2008. The Same-Sex Relationships (Equal Treatment in Commonwealth Laws General Law Reform) Bill 2008 has been returned to the lower house where the government will approve a range of technical amendments.
I've been revamping all the publicity materials for the non-profit I work for, and everyone on the board has been giving me huge compliments on my writing. I am not ashamed to say that I enjoy the validation. A lot.
The Mr. has lost 15 lbs. And the Young Lady got straight As for her first quarter report - and that includes those five AP classes she insisted on taking.
And I found snow boots that fit my wide wide feet and don't look like little kid galoshes.
And it looks like the Metro line out to Dulles Airport will actually be built, which should mean good things for the traffic situation on that side of our area, plus all the air pollution etc. that goes with the traffic.
The volunteer work I've been doing with a no-kill shelter has been amazingly rewarding and happy-making, considering that all I went in hoping for was something where I wouldn't have to talk to people too much. (The frequent puppy cuddles are a bonus, too.)
Also, the ability to pre-order the Cyteensequel (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0756405300/ref=s9newr_c1_img1-rfc_p-3237_p?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=1GG8067WV62K7PBMG60Q&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=463383351&pf_rd_i=507846) is apparently causing lots of people on my flist to squee.
As far as I can tell, he's mentally retiring already. And Obama seems to be diving in headfirst.
Personally, my wonderful in-laws will be here for a visit in two weeks. I think they're pretty nervous about traveling to Taiwan but I'm sure it will be a good visit. And we'll get to spend a few days in Thailand, assuming things have settled down there. My brother is engaged and getting married next year and my BIL and his wife had a baby six months or so ago, all happy things.
I bought sparkly gold new sneakers. Now my feet no longer hurt all the time, and I have sparkly gold shoes. And I am eating chickpeas right now. And (non sequitur?) I admire you a lot, which may not count for much but is true.
* A yarn store opened up near my favourite cafe and I'm going to take my spinning wheel down and learn how to STOP SCREWING UP my beautiful batts of wool. * the owner will come set up my loom for only $25/hr (yes, this could mean $100, but MY LOOM) * I found a therapist on my side of town who looks like a non-crackpot, after 10 years (no, I am not kidding) of looking for someone, ANYONE, who didn't want to realign my sub-atomic subconscious by making me sniff things. * I started writing poetry again. * My government is doing what it should, but I'm sad that the GG just prorogued Parliament instead of kicking the bully PM's ass. * The Green Party remains awesome, and the Liberals, NDP, and Bloc are behaving like adults. * We're tight on money but I can still do amazing things with leftovers and a can of gravy. * My teenager said that her favourite part of the day is coming home after walking the dogs and walking into a house that smells like home, knowing her dinner is cooking. She said, "I always stop right when I open the door and take a deep breath."
T's laptop fried and was BSOD-ing BEFORE it booted up, and we were in despair, BUT my flist put together the money to fix it in something like six hours which I still can't believe happened, and T is happier than he's been in a while (it was dying slowly for a least a couple of weeks).
Plus I appear to have turned pameladean on to E.M. Forster's The Longest Journey, and sovay may read Howards End.
I think I'm becoming friends with my 13-year-old brother (who has decided he wants to join the police force and become a CSI, though I'm pretty sure it's a different job title here) and 27-year-old sister (who has started seeing a very warm, witty young man who made an effort to get to know me when we first met). : ) We've always got on well enough, but it feels like we're developing a real connection with each other now, and that makes me really, really happy.
My buddy who lives in Mumbai, and her extended family, are all OK. This is the big one that I have been heaving sighs of relief and saying thankful prayers over for days.
My Saiyuki Reload calendars, and a really pretty furoshiki I got on eBay to wrap an awkwardly-shaped present, both arrived from Japan today -- great news since I'm a cheapskate who went for SAL shipping, even knowing there was a risk they might not arrive in time for the holidays.
I just saw this movie a few days ago, which is incredibly sweet and heart-warming and life-affirming and all that good warm-and-fuzzy stuff.
Recently discovered this song, which I've had on gleeful (if slightly homesick) heavy rotation ever since. Multi-lingual genre-crossing third culture kid positive island music FTW!
And, um...my kitty and puppy are snuggling next to me and being really cute? I could try to take a picture although it'd honestly just look like a repeat of past incidents of interspecies snorgling...
I got a summer internship offer! Still looking around, but it means I will definitely be able to earn money in the summer. And soon it will be winter vacation and I can sleep in late!
My hospitality English conversation textbook co-written with my boss will acutually be out in book stores end of this month. It also has been confirmed that I will be writing another book with him next year! I am very happy and excited about that.
My dad is feeling well enough to make travel plans for Christmas.
And people are saying interesting things at the Tor.com re-read of _LotR_, and I finished a good draft of a work thing with SteelyKid on my lap, and I got a tricky Christmas present out of the way today.

Barack Obama will be our President in less than two months.
Instead of throwing it away, my friend is giving me his unwanted desk chair, so I don't have to slouch at my computer.
I did that Christmas meme that you did in your blog in my own a couple days ago, and received what looks like a great Utena fanfic rec.
